Natter night 29th February 2016.

This post could have had a couple of titles, such as natter day, or the Monday project after the teaser I posted the other day.
We started to wire about 11 o'clock this morning and finished 4 o'clock this afternoon.

I wonder how many people thought that Boxie's Hornbeam would turn out like it has.

This is the tree before any work was done.

With a slight change of angle and the bottom right branches wired and placed.
Does this give you a clue the way it is going?

Then how about this after about five hours of the two of us adding wire.

Yes a wind swept style.
Nothing has been cut back yet as it is not the right time, they should not be clipped before they come into leaf. There are probably too many branches as well, but they will be thinned out later in the season.

Hemlock update.

In my post yesterday about my Hemlock I forgot to mention about the Nebari, which I think is quite good, but still needs more work.

I have also done some work on the Shari on the right hand side of the trunk

Coming along nicely.

Hemlock changes.

Once again I am going to say take photos of your trees because you cannot remember what they were like when you started to work on them. I have been going back through some old pics and found these of my Hemlock, boy has it changed over the last three years.

This is the tree as it was when purchased, in a large plastic training pot, two years after it was collected.

A change of pot and some unwanted branches removed.

A year on and another pot, before it's first styling.

After styling, showing signs of becoming a nice tree.

Later the same year growing really well.

Last week, yet another new pot and restyle.

This tree is getting better every season, still a way to go but I am very happy with it's progression so far.

Project for Monday.

This is our project for Monday night.

A nice Hornbeam, belongs to Boxie, which has been left to grow on for a full year.

We have an idea how it will be styled, maybe not how you would think, but look out for my Natter night post to see if it works.

Comments please on how you would do it.

Where I do my Bomsai.

I converted my garage a few years ago into a studio to work on my Bonsai trees.

My area for taking photos.

What it looks like from a distance.

Behind the screen is some of my pot display.

The refreshment area and more pots.

Fresh running water for coffee and tea.

Waste, heating and beverages.

Wire store and yet more pots.

The main work area with tools close to hand.

The studio is about eighteen feet by nine feet, amazing what you can fit in a small space.

Natter night 22nd February 2016.

This is not only my natter night but also my 1000th post on the blog, little did I know when I started it would last this long, or that I would find so much to talk about.

My studio display for this special night.

Also as it seems special I thought I would do a restyle on this Hemlock I have had for about three years now.

Part way through.

Work done, now to see how much it develops over the coming season.

A very BIG THANK YOU to all my follower's and visitor's for the support over the last four years.

Another pot.

This is a pot I have had for a long time and I like it a lot.

I think it is of Japanese origin, so I have just posted in Bonsai pot identification FB page to see if anyone can help to find the potter.

Today's work.

What else is there to do on a cold and wet Saturday ? but to get in the studio and work with your Bonsai.

A nice Shohin Chinese Juniper was the first job to be done

After a clip and a little wire it is well on it's way to becoming even better.

The next job was this Hornbeam, which had been sitting on the giveaway bench for a couple of years.
No one was interested in it as it is still there.
After looking at the roots I decided a repot was in order.

Now potted into a training pot, I trimmed it back a little.

Maybe now it will grow a bit better than it has, as it was very pot bound.

Bonsai Thursday.

Usually on a Thursday I have a visit from my friend and Sensei Dave R, but he phoned to tell me he is a bit under the weather so would not be here today.
This did not stop me from doing a repot on this Chinese Juniper, which was needing to be done.

After a small clip out, just to show the trunk better, I then repotted it into a nice pot from Esther Griffiths.

The tree looks a lot bigger than it is, but looks a lot better in this pot.
I will now leave the tree to show good growth before doing a styling job on it.

Ronin Bonsai birthday.

I have just realized that a couple of days ago was the fourth birthday of my blog.

After nearly 1000 posts of which this Squamata was the first photo to appear I am still enjoying it.

This is the same tree today.

I would like to say a big thank you to all the visitors I have had and for all the nice comments.

Natter night 15th February 2016.

What started as a quiet night turned out to be a busy one after Ken M arrived with a pot made of fiber glass and we were looking for a tree to go into it.

Quite a unique pot, but nice.

All I had was this collected Hinoki, so it had to be this.

The branches are a bit to long but hopefully we will get some back buds to work with.

Once potted we used some pull wires to open up the foliage mass to allow light in.

Also tonight I had a close look at this Acer Palmatum to see if the buds had started to swell before doing a repot. It is not quite ready so all I did was clean up the surface of the compost to get rid of some weeds.

A new pot for this Virginia Creeper, which was in a plastic pot.

Another good night over once more.

Natter night 8th February 2016.

Tonight seemed to be a night for repotting as John G brought a Hornbeam to be transferred to a new pot and I also repotted four small trees.

John's Hornbeam in the old pot.

Now in the new pot with a slight change of planting angle.

The four trees I repotted, on the top is a Cryptomera, the two in the middle are Cotoneaster's and the bottom right is a Potentilla.

Another tree John brought was this garden Juniper, which he had wired.

Mike R got to work creating and pruning to give it a basic styling.

A nice Hinoki that John has just acquired was discussed as to what would be the best front.

Quite a busy night once more.

Stand photos.

As I promised here are a couple of photos of my altered stand with trees and pots on.

All of these pots are Bigei.

Another stand altered and painted.

I was never really happy with this stand I made last year, so I have altered it and painted it black.

As it was before staining.

After staining.

Now I think it looks a lot better painted black.

Another photo soon when it has dried, probably with pots on.
