Natter night 30th Dec 2013.

Well here it is the last natter night of 2013, the next one will be in 2014, I can only hope it will be as big a success as it has been in the past.
------------------------------------

It was a quiet night with only three visitors, which was three more than I expected given the time of year and the weather. It just goes to show how much other people enjoy these nights as well as I do.

As no trees turned up I decided to do some work on a Squamata Juniper, which has been left for most of the last growing season to recover from a repot and styling earlier this year.

This is the tree as it was when I first got it.

As it was before I started tonight.

Toying with the idea of removing the covered branch to create a more balanced image.

The final image for tonight with the lower left branch removed and a slight incline to the left.
The pads need a lot more work but that will come over the next few seasons.
---------------------------------------------------

Well that is all from natter night for this year and all that is left for me to say is a very big THANK YOU to everyone who visits my blog.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Happy new year to all my visitors and friends.

More of the same.

This darned weather is not getting any better, not looking good for my natter night, but if anyone turns up I am sure we will enjoy ourselves anyhow.

Very wet and windy, but could we expect anything else at this time of year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

TO ALL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY

Natter night 23rd Dec 2013.

Well only one more natter night left in 2013, but tonight was just as much fun as usual. We had one late comer as well who I think we wakened up with the heat in the studio.
This Ladybird.

I hope he goes back to sleep when it cools down.
-----------------------------------------
Ken M finally got his Larch dewired.

Then we decided a little bit of selective pruning to the apex was needed.

The branch that was removed was too thick at the top of the tree so it was the right thing to do.
It does not look any different in the photos but it is .

There was a couple of finer branches that would replace the thick branch and these were wired and placed.
------------------------------------------
Well thanks for looking in to my blog once more and I hope you all enjoy the forthcoming festivities.

December novice workshop 2013.

Yesterday was the last workshop of 2013 at Willowbog, a small gathering but enjoyable all the same.Being the shortest day of the year it was dark when I set off and dark when I got back,I did manage to get a couple of snaps of the sun coming up though.

A very rare sight these days.

-------------------------------------------
The gathering of students at the start of the workshop.

------------------------------------------
Before starting to apply wire to this Hinoki we thought it a good idea to get it secured into a custom made box, so it would be able to be worked easier, with less stress.

A lower part of the root was removed and the tree was boxed up.

There is still a very good amount of root left to maintain growth.

Here we see the owner of the tree Brian, who was a complete novice a few months ago, inspecting my work.

By applying some heavy wire to the thicker branches and moving them we can now see an image starting to emerge.

Quite a difference to what it was like when it first arrived as you can see below.

Still a very long way to go, but it will be a good learning curve for Brian.
----------------------------------------
Thanks once again to Jean for the famous Willowbog soup at lunch time, it was most welcome.

So that is it for this years workshops.

Looking forward to 2014.

All the best to everyone.

Natter night 16th Dec 2013.

We had another good night with all the usual banter going on, also made better with my old Sensei turning up.It did not take Dave very long to get in the swing of things by helping Margery with a small Beech tree she brought.

He also did some work on the Hemlock that Boxie and I started last week.

Boxie trying to look casual { it is not working Mike }

After adding more wire Dave gave the Hemlock a tweak or two, you can now see an image starting to emerge.
----------------------------------------

Ken M also busy removing wire from his nice twin trunk Larch.
-------------------------------------------------

Finally a new pot for this windswept Larch.
-----------------------------------------

It was nice working with Dave once more, just like the old days.

Another pot.

This is another pot that I have just obtained from a reputable Bonsai nursery in the north of England.

I think it is of Japanese origin, but I am not sure.

Perhaps someone out there can help.
My thanks to anyone who can.

Where did Winter go?

I just had a visit from Mike R who has had a walk round the local park and he brought a couple of twigs off a Hawthorn which is growing there. Looking at these twigs I think we have missed the Winter and gone straight into Spring.

Not only are the buds starting to swell they are bursting into leaf.

I hope this tree has got it right and we are finished with Winter, but I very much doubt it.

Boulevard update.

This is one of my Boulevard Bonsai that was given a restyle earlier this year.

July 2013. Before working.

July 2013. After work.

December 2013. It just shows how much trees change in a short time.

Ready for another clip and refinement.

Natter night 9th Dec 2013.

Unfortunately my Sensei did not manage to come to join us tonight but hopefully will be able to make it in the new year. However there was still five other visitors and we still enjoyed the night.
-----------------------------------

I had planned to give Dave this Hemlock to style but as he was not here Boxie and myself started on it.

There were two branches that were growing straight up and were to thick, so these were removed and made into Jin. Also looking at the pot it will need to be repotted in Spring in a pot that is in one piece.

There was also this large stump which had been dead for a long time, so this had a bit of carving done just to make it look a little better.

Boxie applying the wire.

Still only about half way wired.

We will finish putting the wire on next week and finish the styling.

I think this is the planting angle we will use as it shows a nice line and taper.

Natter night . Getting ready.

I have been informed that I might be getting a visit from my old time Sensei , Mr Dave Rowles.

It will be nice to see my Bonsai master again.
------------------------------

I thought I should put a few of the trees back on the benches for this occasion.

I hope he thinks his teachings have not gone to waste.

December chat at Willowbog 2013.

Well here we are at the final chat of the year at Willowbog and what a busy day it was.
---------------------------
The day in pictures.

There was all sorts of work being done today, by the numerous people that turned up,a bit of everything involved with Bonsai.
Wiring, dewiring, applying raffia, forming Jin,styling, getting advice giving advice.
The camaraderie and banter was brilliant, as was Jeans soup once again.
----------------------------------------------

I hope to see everyone again next year and wish all the Willowboggers a very happy festive season.
