Bonsai Wednesday.

Once again John and Tony braved the weather to come over, but did not bring anything to work on.
------------------------------------------------

So I brought this newly acquired Larch into the studio to have a good look at it.

On close inspection after I lightly cleaned the moss off the base of the tree I discovered it has a really nice Nebari all the way around.

A good point when it comes to selecting a front when I get round to restyling it.

Sorry the photos do not show the roots very well, but they are there and I am happy I found them.

Blustery.

It has been a cold, wet and now getting blustery day out there with the forecast for more and worse to come tomorrow.

Check your trees are prepared before it is to late and they get damaged.

I have just been and done mine.

Three Junipers.

Hemlock.

Taxus.

Cold and dark so I did not stay to long.

Natter night 26th November 2018.

Another good night, but very cold outside, quite a lot of work done on the trees that were brought along.
------------------------------------

This is another Larch that I brought back from our trip to Robert's on Saturday.
It was wired and styled by Robert, which is not what I usually buy but I could not resist this one.

Graham brought this large Larch, which needed the wire removed. It was still holding on to it's needles as it has had a bit of shelter. So the tree was placed outside and given a light shake to remove them, rather than drop them on the floor in the workshop.

After the wire was removed it was good to see the branches had not moved back to their original position.

Robert W brought along this Potentilla for some advice on.

Ken M brought four small tree's, to get some tuition on branch selection.
A nice wind swept Hawthorn.

A Field Maple.

A Palmatum Maple.

Finally a flowering Cherry.

Boxy started to wire his Korean Hornbeam, which will take quite a long time to complete.

Full photos will be posted when it is completed.

Natter night agenda.

On the agenda for my natter night tomorrow 26th November is a wiring and styling of this Beech tree.
-----------------------------------------------

As you can see it is still holding on to it's leaves from last season.

Hopefully we can improve the image a little.

Look into my blog to find out how it turns out.

A day out.

Today I had a day out with a new to Bonsai guy called Carl M from not to far away from where I live.
It was an introduction into our world of this passion to play with small trees.
----------------------------------------
First stop on our way up to visit Robert Porch in Glasgow, was to this place for breakfast.

What a good meal to keep us going all day.

Carl being given the tour of Robert's garden.

Being new to Bonsai he has now got off to a good start, with three trees, a pot, some wire and some tools.

I got my eye on these pots but resisted the urge to buy.

I did however succumb to this nice Larch.

It was nice to meet such a good guy and spend the day up in Bonnie Scotland with him.
I am looking forward to helping him on his journey into our Bonsai world.

Driftwood update.

A bit more done on the driftwood I have been working on.
-----------------------------------------

Pleased with it so far.

Driftwood work.

I have been doing some more work on the piece of driftwood I started yesterday.
---------------------------------

Fixed to a bit of slate and first coat of lime sulpher.

Bonsai Thursday with Dave.

When Dave came today he brought some pieces of driftwood for us to work with.
------------------------------------
You may well ask what you can do with bits of wood, but after a good look at all the pieces we decided to set the idea of a Tanuki into action.

This is the one we chose.

A good bit of work later and we have made a reasonable start, by splitting and twisting.

It will need a lot more work done before we chose an appropriate tree for it.
We will also need to find a pot that matches the image we have in mind.

Birthday prezzie.

My birthday prezzie from my son finally arrived, just in time as it is quite cold tonight.
-------------------------------

Thank you Andrew.

Bonsai Wednesday.

John brought another of Andy's trees tonight for me to work on.
-----------------------------------------
This small Larch planted on slate, the compost was held in place with some plastic mesh, but was not secured very well.

So I drilled some holes through the slate so it could be fixed more securely.

I then rewired the tree then gave it a basic styling.

Still need a fair bit of work, but enough for now.

As always one final tweak.

My thanks to Tony for taking the photos.

Ken's new display benches.

Yesterday Boxy and me went to Ken's to help him replace his display benches as the old one's were rotting.
---------------------------------------------
Built with decking boards with breeze block supports.

The trees replaced and much safer now.

Natter night 19th November 2018.

Once again there was only one tree brought tonight, a very nice Juniper.
---------------------------------------------
It was in need of being dewired.

Which Graham and Tony got right into.

Then Boxy and I did a bit of tidying up with the dead parts and Jin.

Meanwhile Tony went back to making the coffee.

Before some rescue work, saving ladybirds.

Yet another good night with good company.

John's Boulevard.

 An update on John's Boulevard.
------------------------------------

This is the tree after the first time I styled it in May this year.

When John brought it on Wednesday, it had put on loads of new growth.

After a light prune, coming along nicely.

Less than six months.

Bonsai Wednesday.

Both Tony and John brought trees tonight, John also brought a Larch that belongs to Andy J.
------------------------------------------------------------
I promised Andy I would give this Larch a rewire for him.

So I got started on it.

The finished tree.

This is one of two Potentila that Tony brought.

It had some thick branches removed before a little wire was added by Tony.

As did this second one.

Hoping for a good season next year.

John's tree, a Boulevard Cypress, back for another light prune.

I got John in the photo to show the size, this tree is becoming better with each pruning.

A very busy night, enjoyed by all.
